Makeup as a Confidence Booster: A Reflection on Growth and Purpose
For many people, makeup serves as more than a routine or a form of self-expression; it becomes a journey of self-discovery, growth, and even a lifeline to confidence and inner peace. This perspective came to light during my recent interview with makeup artist, Samantha Booker, who sees her work, not just as a career but a calling. Through her story, we see how makeup can be a powerful bridge between insecurity and confidence, self-doubt and purpose, and even serve as a form of ministry.
Growing Up with Insecurities and the Path to Makeup Artistry
Booker, also known as the “Soft Slay Specialist,” shared how her passion for makeup developed from a place of insecurity. Growing up as a dark-skinned girl in a predominantly Caucasian town left her feeling different, inadequate, and distanced from the typical beauty standards around her. Like many of us, she initially sought external solutions to internal struggles, thinking that improving her appearance might heal her feelings of inadequacy. As she grew, makeup became both her armor and a creative outlet, sparking a journey of confidence and resilience.
Inspired by the limitations her mother faced in finding suitable makeup shades, she decided to create a line of products—”Shades by Sammy Brielle”—to offer young girls a chance to feel seen and beautiful in their own skin. Through her business, she discovered that her artistry was more than just a creative endeavor; it was a way to serve others and uplift them. Her focus shifted after college, and she realized that her mission went beyond beauty—it was about helping young women discover their worth and identity, particularly their value in the eyes of God.
Embracing Faith and Humility in a Creative Career
Booker acknowledged that her journey was one of learning and growth, especially in terms of humility and faith. As a self-taught artist, she relied on her faith to guide her through the challenges of building a career without formal training. She credits God’s guidance for helping her develop her skills and a unique style that resonates with her clients. Her work isn’t just about making people look good; it’s about uplifting them, helping them feel loved and confident in their own skin. She draws parallels between her artistry and her faith, learning lessons from each client encounter and recognizing that the Holy Spirit guides her every step.
Makeup Artistry as Ministry and the Lessons Learned Along the Way
Her makeup artistry has become her ministry, where she not only transforms outward appearances but also nurtures self-esteem and provides encouragement. Working with a diverse range of clients has offered her a deep understanding of human insecurities and the unspoken struggles many face—whether that’s anxiety, depression, or just a lack of self-worth. She sees her role as part makeup artist, part confidante, providing a safe space for her clients to open up and feel valued.
In each encounter, she’s reminded of her purpose and finds beauty in the lessons God teaches her through her clients. She sees every client interaction as a chance to give and receive—offering them confidence while learning lessons in humility, patience, and empathy.
The Role of Trust and Letting Go in Creativity
Booker explained how the creative process often requires her to let go of control, something she’s learned to do both in her work and in her relationship with God. Trust is essential in her line of work; clients come to her trusting her skills and vision, and she, in turn, trusts God to lead her through each moment. Letting go and allowing creativity to flow freely has brought her some of her best work and deepest connections. She encourages other creatives to lean into their faith, to relax, and to let God take the reins, especially in moments of uncertainty.
Life’s Journey: From Insecurity to Confidence and Purpose
Reflecting on her journey, Booker admitted she struggled with feelings of rejection and self-doubt in her younger years. Yet, looking back, she’s amazed by the life she’s built—a thriving business, a strong marriage, and a son. Her story is a testament to God’s hand in her life, guiding her through insecurities and fears, and shaping her into someone who now has the privilege to help others find their confidence.
Through makeup artistry, Booker has found not just a career, but a calling that blends creativity, faith, and compassion. Each day brings new lessons, new faces, and deeper understanding, reminding her—and all of us—that purpose often lies beyond our insecurities, and that faith can turn our greatest doubts into our greatest strengths
